How good is putty during plastering ?

Post by jackalbda »

I heard from a person ( he has fair knowledge in construction ) , that while plastering , its better not to go for putty finish. Reason being, putty , over a period of time gets very brittle and falls off. Also ,according to him , if you are not very careful while moving furniture around, if they hit the wall, it will fall off it seems. According to him , better finished ( probably with some extra cost), plastering itself is good and durable.

What is your opinion on this ? I am planning to talk to my contractor about this option of having better finished plastering and avoid putty .

Hi,
Are you talking of lime rendering or putty done during painting? Lime rendering is used to save cost on putty quantity .If you go for the best plastering ,even in future there will be scratches and damages moving furniture. If the plastering damaged once you can do nothing to patch it.
The main reasons putty used are
1.To get smooth and repairable surfaces
2.Finishing to mm level is possible
3.Colors will be actual and brighter than directly on plastering surface
4.Saves the paint quantity
5. Patching the nails holes ,internal wiring pipes etc are easy
6.In the plastering if there is patch you will see it what ever and how ever many coats of paint you apply.
7.You cannot match plastering with putty finish ,how good the workmanship be.

Hi,

The question given by you is not clear. However here are the 2 options.
1. For internal plastering, use only blended or 43 grade OPC cement, with very good river sand (kollegal / t.narasipura sand) in the ratio of 1:5 or 1:4, and finish the top surface without any lime rendering or lime paste. Give a semi rough finish for the internal plastering, and after 20 days of curing, it can be given a ready white cement based putty like (j.k wall / birla wall / lata finish wall putty). I strongly recommend Lata finish - laticrete brand wall putty.
2. For internal plastering with lime rending, use the same cement river sand as mentioned above, but while giving a lime rending top, tell the mason to avoid pressing the gurmal over the plastered surfaces. Let him render the wall with minimum press, with which you can achieve a fairly better surface without undulations.

For all my constructions, I have only opted for the First option without lime rending, and the white cement based putty does a great work of adhesion and finish. You don't need to give a cement primer in the first case.

all the best.
