Terrace garden...!!!

hello All,

Am planning to have a Terrace Garden of about 8x11 ft, it would be a gr8 help if anyone can tell about what kind of precaution i need to take (specially related to water proofing)??

Hello ,
I recently inquired, in order for you to have a lawn + plant some shrubs , it is suggested to go for multiple layers of waterproofing \ Insulation plus some plumbing to drain out excess water. Pidilite\Dr Fixit has range of solutions for terrace garden . The one with 15 yr durability costs approx Rs 200 sqft with labour , there is one more range with 25 yr durability with insulation costs approx Rs 400 sqft with labour.

before that kindly check the slab whether it is designed for garden . such us weight over the slab.

How about having pergolas with mainly creepers planted in pots? This will provide shade and greenery (and maybe some fruits/flowers/vegetables) too?

if I remember , the person from pidilite was mentioning that skilled labour is required (they will provide the details if enquired). Jult is right , you may want to consult the structural engineer, 100 pounds /cft would be the approx load of the top soil\growing mix with some water absorbtion.
for ex a lawn of 6 in : for 10x 10 ft area it can easily add 2.5 ton of dead load. In your case , lets say for creepers , keep 18 inch top soil and you plant them 5 in one row and other 5 in other row , with 10 ft spacing between them , you can imagine a square of 10 ft x 10 ft and your plants are 5 in one row and in the opposite corner 5 in a row , it can easily add 1.5 tonnes + add 0.5 ton for pergola . so it would still be 2 tons..
I am also contemplating the same for my construction of 60x40 villa.. I had this same creeper\pergola idea too. with few passion fruit vines,thunbergias etc..

Hi Ankit,
First thing you need to under stand is that terrace garden is not just about water proofing.Its all about maintenance.If you want to grow the lawn and plants direct on the slab its not a easy part.I would recommend to use as many pots you want to grow plants and for lawn you should use lawn platic tiles that helps excess water to drain out easily.Make sure there is enough slope maintained for water to drain out easily.
There are various company that are specialized in water proofing ( dr.fixit ,fosroc, sika etc..)

Ankit, you need to check the thickness of the slab and whether the columns can take on the extra weight. Terrace gardens require thicker slabs and if the beams and columns are not designed to take on the extra load, there will be cracks near the beams which will also cause the dampness in the wall. I hope you have discussed this idea with your structural designer/architect. Incorrect planning will lead to unnecessary maintenance costs over the years.

Btw, Fosroc has a good reputation in water-proofing.

Hi,
I am not sure where this material is available,you can try in JC raod where you get the door mats etc..,they are usually laid and executed by the landscape team.You can contact any nursery guys.
