NIE (National Institute of Engg) CREST in Mysore (
http://www.niecrest.in) also has developed BioGas products. I understand that they are willing to offer guidance and training in setting up a BioGas plant. I was told an unit for residential use will cost around Rs 20,000 (2012)
You can find the detailed Cost Benefit Analysis etc... 4MB PDF download is here:

BioGas from Kitchen Waste
Re: BioGas from Kitchen Waste
NIE (National Institute of Engg) in Mysore has developed a Biogas system - it seems we can visit NIE CREST to understand biogas system. I intend to install one next year. I was told we can get 3-4 cylinder equivalents in an year for a 4 member family.

The nice thing about biogas is you can throw in your cooked food leftovers, rotting fruit/veg etc too! (which I can't do with plain ol' composting).
