Yes seeing images now a d understood the concept. Few questions I have

1. From where you procured the steel mesh of required perforation size in Bangalore ?

3. How much of water is collected in one day of heavy rain in bangalore on say 1500 sq feet roof ? I have tank of approx 12.5 K liters to augment capacity I can pump water to overhead tank may be 2 tanks of total 3k liters capacity.

2. What did you use to paste the mesh to plastic ?

3. Are you using any kind of first flush system ?

Replies to your questions:

• 1. Steel meshes are available at a few shops in City market area. I did procure from a shop on SJP Road by the side of the Masjid - Jain Wire Netting Stores. Meshes are generally sold for a minimum length of 1 mtr. x 1 mtr. For smaller width, you may have to pay a premium, and sometimes may not be sold. For mosquito mesh, it would be generally available at most shops selling aluminum window parts.
  
  2. For a 1500 sq.ft. roof area, in case of heavy rains you can generally collect around 10 to 15 thousand liters.
  
  3. For pasting I have used M-seal adhesive (fast setting) which is available in all hardware shops.
  
  4. First flush system is normally used in all rainwater harvesting systems. One of the simplest ways is to imagine your downpipe from rooftop touching the ground and then directed to the percolation pit. In this pipe at about 4 feet above, fit a valve for stopping/allowing the flow. A couple of feet above, fit a T and then run the pipe parallel to the ground for about 3 to 5 feet. Connect an elbow and then attach a pipe till it reaches your filter. When the stop valve is opened, it works as a first flush as it provides a straight path for water to go out. When closed water would be directed to the filter. The first flush can also be used to direct excess water to the percolation pit when your storages are full.

These filters are a total game changer in rainwater harvesting. These filters are also hygienic because they are easy to clean and can be cleaned at the end of every rain. You will also be able to notice what types of impurities are there on your rooftop and take steps to reduce them.
