Now the sump trouble

Hi,

My 30x40 site has been blessed 80% with rocks. After much struggle
we are now ready to put the plinth beams. I now find that our earlier
ideas for sump tank are not looking practical now.

I am not a vastu-freak but I need to consider the sentiments of my
family. My site is west facing. To construct a 5,000-6,000 litres tank,
NE location has only trouble. Because of rocky condition, the
footings are 4 feet from the plinth level. Only in the SW point,
there is soil and only one footing is at 6 feet.

Any thoughts for my situation ? I am told that the sump tank depth
cannot go below the footing depth.

Hi sholla,
Look for a option to built sump wider/longer and less deepth.See if you can increase the area rather rather than depth.You can always fit sump even in the plinth area and just give the access chamber from out side.The one issue is that to clean you need to bend down and get in to it.May be you can give 2 access chambers to clean easily.

I am just wondering, can the sump tank span across the plinth
beam going up to the site boundary ?

Also, can we make the access chamber deeper than the rest
of the tank ? This can accommodate the foot valve of the
pump and also provide an easier access .

you can make sump spanning up to boundary wall.just be careful that neighboring compound wall doesn't get affected.
You can make access chamber area deeper but be carefully to maintain a good among of gap between foot valve and base.since all the water gets collected along with mud in the ditch,frequently you need to clean the ditch.

My sump saga is continuing.
Right now the all round brick wall has been put in place along with a three
inch concrete on the floor. Next step apparently is to put the chicken mesh
on the walls, use some water proofing compund and then do one-shot plastering
all around including floor.

Problem is the contractor is saying sump will be 99% water proof !!
Where should I go for the remaining 1% ?

Just wondering now, should I need to call a "professional water proofing"
company ?

One of the company I contacted, Prime Water proofing quoted
approx.12,000 rs. to finish the tank all by themselves. This quote was on
telephone without even seeing the site. In spite of many calls they never
turned up.

How has been other's experience in this regard ? Can I take the risk
and ask the contractor to do his best (and start praying ) ?

Any good water proofing comapny to consult ?

Hi sholla
You can get 100% water proof for certain years.There is no guarantee for life long.Just make sure you take up water proofing job every 10 years once.Since in sump its very difficult to find the leak.

I understand your point. In your opinion, will there be a lot of difference
between a contractor applying some water proofing technique and , say,
the solution from the Dr.FixIt applicator ?

Hi Praveen,
Can you please elaborate on "Water proofing every 10 years" for an already operational sump tank? Are you referring to some chemical treatment to the walls? Is it safe for a water consumption perspective (obviously will get filtered through eureka forbes filter, but still)?

Am curious to know what kind of treatment is available for preventive maintenance of sump leakages.

Regular Sump water proofing is not a must unless you feel there is considerable amount of water getting leaked.There are water proofing components that are safe for drinking.In fact bwssb carry these water proofing works on regular basis in all the public over head tanks across the Bangalore.
In general the water proof guy suggest to store water for one or 2 days after water proofing done and then use it for general purpose .Later you can use it for drinking.
