Mesh for Cracks ????

Today i asked a mason to plaster the internal wall cracks by filling motar (cement + sand in proportion of 1 to 3 ratio).
He suggested me to embedd 4 mm mesh. I was not sure why he suggested me to do that. He had no explaination but
said, if i want the cracks not to appear again then we need to embedd the mesh.
Is this right approach to cover up cracks that 1 inch in width and 5 feet long. these are mainly right below beam.
any Tips to permantly eliminate these cracks.
